Congratulations to Shannon (age 12) from Wellingto Congratulations to Shannon (age 12) from Wellington, who has won an international dinosaur-themed art competition run by the Dinosaur University in Australia! 🦖🦕

There were 3 categories: 5-8 year olds, 9-12 year olds and people’s choice (voted via Facebook). Shannon won the 9-12 category for her 3d Ichthyosaur skeleton based on our 'Poppy' find. Shannon did some research on the real find to go along with her art.

The judges said:
'Congratulations, Shannon, on winning the 9-12 year age group in the Dinosaur University Mary Anning Art Prize, with this delightful Ichthyosaur. Your work showed a great deal of insight into something recently found in your local area, and the judges were impressed by the main work, and the telling of the story.'

⭐️ Well done Shannon from everyone at The Museum of Somerset! ⭐️👏👏

On Paul Street, Taunton, opposite the library, is On Paul Street, Taunton, opposite the library, is the site of the Mechanics' Institute which was established in 1830.

Mechanic Institutes were common at this time in towns throughout Britain. Often established through philanthropy, they were an early form of adult education and provided an alternative to drinking and gambling. They also served as a way for developments in science and technology to be shared with the general population.

The inaugural lecture was given by Andrew Crosse who famously experimented with electricity at his home at Fyne Court, just outside of Taunton. He was a controversial figure who at one time believed he had created life by passing electrical currents through minerals. It has been suggested that his electrical experiments, some of which involved trying to capture the power of lightening, had been one of the influences on Mary Shelley when she wrote the novel Frankenstein. She had attended at least one of his lectures in London.

From 1901, every 8 minutes, an electric tram servi From 1901, every 8 minutes, an electric tram service ran from the bottom of East Reach to the Taunton Railway Station. In 1909 the route was extended to terminate on Kingston Road, Rowbarton. The tramway was run by a private company, the Taunton Electric Traction Company, but was bedevilled with financial problems during its 20 years of operation.

The 550 volts it required came from a new electricity generating station in St James Street but, in 1921, the council cut off the tram company's electricity supply for failure to pay for their bills following a dispute over the price. This marked the end of the Taunton tram service. Most tramways elsewhere were council run and lasted a lot longer.

Some of the cast iron tram poles or 'standards' that carried the overhead line, were converted into lamp posts before eventually taken down. The last one being removed from its site on Greenway Avenue in 2015.

This week's Town Tour highlight begins early one m This week's Town Tour highlight begins early one morning in 1879, when the guests of the White Hart Inn, East Reach were woken by a man who had no clothing other than a rug wrapped round his waist. Strips of blankets were subsequently found in Gaol Lane and eight constables set off in pursuit. They discovered Thomas Bevan in hiding at Lambrook Farm, having escaped from Wilton Gaol.

The House of Correction at Wilton was completed by March 1756 and subsequently enlarged in 1815 and again in 1843 when it was given the status of County Gaol.

On average, the gaol housed 100 prisoners at any one time, who would be expected to rise at 5.45 am each day and work from 6.30-7.30am, 9am-1pm, 2-6pm and 7-8pm with breaks in between for chapel and rest.

No drinking, smoking or gaming was permitted, nor were books or printed papers without prior permission. Silence was the order of the day; any prisoner found talking or even making signals lost the right to visitors.

Many of the prisoners died of disease and old age and are buried nearby at Wilton church.

Today's Town Tour highlight takes us back to Monda Today's Town Tour highlight takes us back to Monday 01 August 1903, the day that the legendary Col. W.F. Cody 'Buffalo Bill' brought his Wild West Show to Taunton's Poor Grounds (now Victoria Park), East Reach.

The weather was described as 'glorious' by the County Gazette which also described the scenes as "Train after train poured its load of excursionists into the GWR station. Special trains were run from the principal towns of Somerset, Gloucestershire, and Devonshire, ... while very numerous contingents came from South Wales. ... The highways for miles around were thick with all kinds of vehicles." Two shows were put on that day, both seating 15,000 people.

The County Herald stated, "The program consisted of twenty items. The opening portion was a grand revue of the rough riders of the world, led by Colonel Cody. This was followed by 'exhibitions of feats in the saddle', a recreation of the attack on the Deadwood Mail Coach, and then 'Colonel Cody exhibits his deadly prowess as a shot, by shattering glass balls, thrown up in the air, even when the horse is at full pace. ... There was also a Red Indian war dance...." The show had been opened by the overture "Star Spangled Banner" by the Cowboy Band and also included artillery drills by a Battery of the U.S. Artillery and Caucasian Cossacks.

On This Day: In 1729 Somerset still had 180 annual On This Day: In 1729 Somerset still had 180 annual fairs, most of which dated from the Middle Ages. Among them was Taunton Fair, which began each year on 17 June, St Botolph’s Day. It was one of the town’s two fairs.
During Taunton Fair in the 1800s Bridge Street and North Street were lined with cattle and sheep, while the road towards Staplegrove was filled with horses for sale. Boats from Bridgwater brought produce for the garlic fair, held on the bridge each morning at six. The last two days of Taunton Fair were given over to games. Donkey races, wheelbarrow races and climbing the greasy pole for a leg of mutton were among the favourites.
Respectable inhabitants bitterly complained that the fair left Taunton filthy for days afterwards. But attempts to abolish it in 1882 didn’t succeed. Instead it vanished quietly at an unknown date early in the 1900s.

This portrait of James, Duke of Monmouth was paint This portrait of James, Duke of Monmouth was painted in about 1680.
Born in 1649, the Duke of Monmouth was the illegitimate son of Charles II. He was a charismatic and brave young man. When his father died in February 1685, Monmouth was in exile. Many people thought that he should now become king rather than his Catholic uncle, James. Plans for a rebellion were quickly made, and on 11 June 1685 Monmouth landed at Lyme Regis. The Duke of Monmouth was a popular figure in the West Country and he hoped that many people would flock to join him. Many did but his attempt to take the English throne from James II ended in disaster on 6 July 1685 with the Battle of Sedgemoor.

The last of the battle was still being fought as Monmouth made his escape from Sedgemoor. He travelled towards the south coast hoping to escape to Europe. Though disguised in country clothes, he was soon captured near Ringwood in Dorset. His fate was inevitable, and on 15 July he was beheaded on Tower Hill, London.

For today's Town Tour highlight we are visiting No For today's Town Tour highlight we are visiting No.1 High Street, Taunton, now the site of the Clarks Shoe Shop. Built in 1975, the design of this modern building was intended to give a flavour of the box-like shape, dark timbers and plain plaster walls of the building that it replaced.

For well over 100 years this building was the home of the much-loved Somerset and Devon Stores where, it was said, that you could buy just about anything. Prior to this the building was, for about 250 years, the White Hart Inn.

An archaeological excavation of the site, carried ahead of the 1975 construction, made some surprising discoveries. A number of filled holes were found, which would have held massive posts in the medieval period. It is proposed that they were the supports for an original wooden market house, known to exist in the 13th century.

However, evidence was then found of activity in the later Iron Age, approximately 3000 years ago. The items found were flints, a piece of smelted iron, post holes and curved gully, cut by the runoff from a round roof. This would be the earliest evidence of human habitation in the town of Taunton.

Today (11 June) is St Barnabas’s Day, when in ce Today (11 June) is St Barnabas’s Day, when in centuries past the thoughts of West Country people turned to haymaking. As the old rhyme said, ‘On St Barnabas, Put a scythe to the grass’. Of course it all depended on the weather. The farmer would consult his barometer to make sure ‘the glass was steady’ and also checked that the grass was ‘just right’. If it was fully ripe the seeds would fall from the plants and rob the hay of goodness. But if the signs were favourable, a gang of mowers gathered in the morning meadow with their scythes, then with long rhythmic sweeps laid out the grass in swathes. Later, men, boys and women would turn the grass while it dried in the field, then gather it into ‘pooks’ before it was pitchforked on to farm waggons. This great moment of the farming year traditionally ended with the haymaking supper.
