The Historic Environment Record (HER) records the archaeological sites and historic buildings of Somerset and BaNES.

You can search the data for places and types of site, or you can look at the mapped depictions overlaid on modern and historic maps.

There is usually detailed information about each site and a list of references to take your research forward.

The HER is used to inform planning and development decisions, as well as by all types of researchers interested in the physical evidence of the past.

Local Heritage List

Local heritage lists are one way in which local heritage – buildings, monuments, sites, places, areas, historic parks and gardens or other designed landscapes – can be formally identified, as part of the wider range of designation, so that their significance can be taken into account in planning applications affecting the building or site or its setting. Nominations for the local list are made by the community. In Somerset this is being coordinated by The South West Heritage Trust. Find out more and make a nomination.
