After you’ve chosen a place for the Local Heritage List, the next step is to tell us about it.

First, make sure you look at the Criteria to check that it meets the guidelines. You can search the Historic Environment Record for Somerset or Exmoor National Park to make sure it is not nationally designated. If the site has already been nominated or added to the Local Heritage List, we’d still like to hear from you if you have extra information about its significance.

Gather the information you need. This will vary depending on the way you want to nominate, but ideally it will include:

• The building or feature’s name and type (e.g. factory).
• The address or National Grid Reference (e.g. 320306,125713 or ST 2030 2571)
• A detailed description – consider including:
  — appearance and noteworthy features
  — age (roughly)
  — the condition and any risks to its survival
  — why the asset is significant and how it meets the selection criteria
• Your contact info (optional), in case we need further details. It won’t be passed to third parties.
• Relevant files or images for uploading, and their copyright status.

We love to receive photographs alongside nominations; however, we do however ask that you check our Photography Policy (available from our Resources page) before submitting images. Please do not put yourself at risk when taking photographs for the project.

Then choose how to nominate:

For individual sites, you can download and complete the form for single nominations. If you have several heritage assets to nominate, it may be easier to use our multiple sites Excel spreadsheet.

Forms can be emailed to lhl@swheritage.org.uk (Somerset) or HER@exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk (Exmoor National Park). You can include any pictures or documents that support the nomination(s) as an attachment. Please clearly label any images that you send, particularly if they relate to more than one site.
