Add to the LHL

Know Your Place is an interactive collection of historic maps covering South West England. It allows you to view conservation records and compare landscapes across time. There’s also a ‘Community Layer’ which lets members of the public record their own heritage. This is where you can add to the Local Heritage List.

Follow the steps below for guidance.

1. Have your information ready

To make a listing, you’ll need to provide details about the chosen candidate. Have a look at our guidelines about what can be listed (and the definition of a ‘building’). And check the nomination advice page to find out what information we’re looking for (this includes a building’s basic details, a description showing how it meets the criteria, and photos or documents to upload).

2. Go to the map

Head to https://maps.bristol.gov.uk/kyp/?edition=som#.

The screen is divided into two maps. One is the main map and one is the comparison. They show the same place at different eras.

3. Clear the screen

  • Click the ‘Know Your Place’ bubble (bottom-left).
  • Click the ‘Show/hide the menu’ button (top-right).
  • Click the vertical slider between both maps, and drag it to the far left.

4. Find your place

Navigate to the building or site you want to list by clicking the magnifying glass (top-left) and typing a Somerset or Exmoor address.

Use the and buttons to zoom in and out.

5. Make an entry

Select the pencil button (top-right). It will turn orange.

Click the map at the spot you want to list and select ‘Create a new record here’.

6. Fill out the form

Add your information about the building, and attach any images or records by clicking ‘Choose File’. If possible, keep attachments under 2MB.

Then press the blue Submit button. The listing is complete!

Once it’s been moderated, your nomination will be marked with a green diamond. So – why not add another?
