WHAT IS WESTON NOW?
‘Weston Now’ is a project developed with the intention of creating collections inspired by communities, encouraging groups and individuals to interact with heritage in a way that they may not have done before. We were intrigued by the variety of groups and individuals who call Weston super-Mare their home and wanted to capture their memories, discovering more about the heart of the community.
Visual artist Joseph Cornell and his assemblage artwork greatly influenced the focus of ‘Weston Now’, which was to engage participants in creating their own assemblages, with a view to tell the story of Weston through displays of objects. This way, the artwork can be interpreted by an audience, with personal elements hidden throughout.
Self-portraiture was an important part of the project, as well as collecting audio recordings of participants sharing their memories or telling stories, providing an interesting blend of digital and physical content. We hoped that this would give ‘Weston Now’ the ability to encourage ideas about heritage through a variety of mediums.
