Introduction from lead teacher Sue Gregory

Two classes of Year 3 pupils really enjoyed this project based on the Roman figurine of Capricorn. It linked very well with our recent work about the Roman Empire. We got to know the artefact using the online 3D model and sketching it in different styles. We found out about how it was discovered, and this inspired our own stories entitled ‘The Metal Detectorist’s Discovery’. We also created our own story about Capricorn, using questions, such as; Where was it made? Who did it belong to? How did it end up in a field on the Mendips?

We had lots of fun drawing and painting our own half and half mythical creatures which we made into a ‘split picture’ book. We also went onto make shadow puppets of these creatures and use them to make up little plays and share them with our peers.
