Discovery Saturday:

Harvest Time

 Coming up:  10th October 2026

Somerset Heritage Centre

Drop in on Saturday morning for an exhibition of archive documents from the 17th to 20th Centuries, showcasing Somerset’s food culture from harvest to table – and take home a recipe from the archives to try for yourself!

 Coming up:  10th October 2026

This autumn, join us at the Somerset Heritage on Saturday morning for an exhibition of archive documents showcasing Somerset’s food culture from harvest to table.

The stars of the show will be the recipe books of Somerset cooks dating back to the 17th Century, as recorded in their own handwriting – flick through the pages and be transported to the kitchens of the past, and perhaps find historical recipes of some of your favourite dishes. Transcripts of a selection of the recipes will be provided, which you can take away with you to try out for yourself at home! We’d love to see your successful (or not so successful) dishes if you do give them a go.

You will also be able to listen to recorded memories of harvest time and cider-making in the 20th Century from Somerset farmers, see photographs of traditional harvests and local harvest festivals, and learn about the Somerset cider industry via the records of local breweries.

Part of Discovery Saturday

This event is part of Discovery Saturdays, where visitors can also book a Searchroom session on the same day if they’d like to explore the collections further.
