Talk & Tea:

Building the M5 Motorway

 Coming up:  9th October 2026

The Museum of Somerset

Join Tom Mayberry to discover how building the M5 motorway impacted Somerset and some of the archaeology that was found.

 Coming up:  9th October 2026

Between 1972 and 1974 the building of the M5 Motorway cut a swathe through the Somerset countryside. In this talk Tom Mayberry will provide the context for this vast civil engineering project and describe some of the archaeology that was found.

The highlight of the event will be the showing of part of a unique film of construction work in progress near Taunton. It was taken by the late Norman Cozens of Orchard Portman and has now been expertly edited and given a soundtrack by the filmmaker Julian Bishop.

Your ticket includes a cup of tea and a biscuit with a chance to chat, after the talk.
