Book Illustrations
Following VE Day in May 1945, Reckitt travelled from London to Somerset by train and, having been unable to reach Washford, walked the 20-mile journey from Taunton Railway Station to Golsoncott. This determined trek seems an appropriate beginning to the next chapter of her life, during which her artistic explorations would continue at the home she so loved.
Reckitt’s skills as a wood engraver continued to grow in the post-war years, leading to several commissions for illustrations to accompany both fiction and non-fiction publications. They show Reckitt’s skills as an observer of life and people, capable of creating distinctive scenes of daily interaction.
From the 1950s to the 1980s Reckitt stepped away from book illustration, but returned in 1981 with 7 Psalms, a beautiful collection of prints that demonstrates Reckitt’s deep respect for nature and strong Christian faith.
