2017 – 2020: RETURN TO ABSTRACTION

Cover of the Redfern Gallery exhibition catalogue, 2014.
A very successful exhibition of Brian Rice’s work from the 1960s was held in 2014 at the Redfern Gallery in London. It inspired him to reappraise his artistic direction. He gave up archaeological subjects and returned to the pure abstraction of his London output. He continues to work with totally abstract ideas from his home studio in Dorset.

In this painting Rice further explores the motif of the parallel line, which he first used in his artwork from the London years.
Acrylic on canvas, 40 x 40 cm
This painting, like many of Brian Rice’s works, was created by drawing shapes on the canvas with a pencil and set square, allowing them to evolve gradually. This process lasts several weeks until a satisfactory structure emerges.
Acrylic on canvas, 92 x 92 cm
Son of Covid is unique among Brian Rice’s works for its subject matter and its direct response to an unprecedented event. It references the Covid-19 pandemic as it was taking hold during March and April 2020. The work was created in an environment without the pressures of any planned exhibitions. Instead there was only ‘endless uninterrupted time’ that seemed to stretch out before him.
