Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,500 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers. Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.
During two consecutive weekends this September (6-9 and 13-16) we will be celebrating heritage, community and history in Somerset and Devon.

Guided Walk on Saturday 8 September
Join us for a stroll around Bridgwater to find out more about the town’s fascinating heritage.
This two-hour guided walk will look at the history of Bridgwater Castle and the town, the bridge and the river Parrett, the town’s industrial heritage and some of its buildings.
Behind the Scenes Tours on Friday 14 September – FULLY BOOKED
At the Trust’s Heritage Centres in Somerset and Devon there will be ‘Behind the Scenes Tours.’
The Heritage Centres store the county archives with a vast collection of documents dating from the 8th century to the present day. The Somerset Heritage Centre also houses the Museum’s reserve collections.
Hear from our experts about the collections, how they are cared for, and view some hidden treasures.
Visit a Museum on Saturday 15 September
The Trust’s Museums in Taunton and Glastonbury are also open for special events.
If you haven’t already visited the re-opened Somerset Rural Life Museum come along for a special free day.
You can also explore Taunton’s 12th-century castle (home to The Museum of Somerset) and go behind the scenes to climb the tower. Whilst you’re there don’t forget to pop into our temporary summer exhibition, ‘From Spinning Tops to Spacehoppers’ for a good-ole reminisce about growing up in Somerset.
