Inspired by Science

The human body uses its senses to help experience the world. Can you name the 5 senses? Touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste.

  • Here’s the science:

Leonardo Da Vinci meticulously observed human anatomy and came to several conclusions about facial proportions which can help with self-portraits. Da Vinci split the face into three equal parts: from hairline to eyebrows, from eyebrows to the bottom of the nose, and from nose to chin. He also discovered that your eyes sit right in the middle of your head from top to bottom! And if you look closely at your ears, the top usually lines up with your eyebrows, while the bottom matches the bottom of your nose.

The Heart

People are all different, we all have different faces, skin colours, and styles on the outside – but inside, our bodies have so much in common.

  • Here’s the science:

Blood is pumped around the body by the heart. Travelling through tubes called arteries, veins and capillaries and in one day blood can travel 12000 miles! Blood is red due to the presence of red blood cells. These red cells, called haemoglobin, carry oxygen around the body. This glass cup loosely represents the heart, or more specifically a chamber of the heart. Pressing on the balloon mimics the heart muscle squeezing, it increases pressure and decreases volume just like a real heartbeat. As a result the red liquid is forced up and out of the open straw (arteries). The sealed straw stops the liquid from flowing that way, just like valves do in a real heart, helping everything flow the right way.
