Experience the art and precision of wood engraving in this hands‑on day course led by acclaimed British artist and printmaker Ben Goodman. Perfect for complete beginners or those looking for a refresher, this practical workshop is packed with everything you need to get started.

Under Ben’s expert guidance—drawing on more than 10 years of teaching experience—you’ll learn how to prepare a wood block, cut your design, and create your own finished print. No previous experience is required; simply come along with an idea or two for the image you’d like to engrave.

About the Tutor

Ben Goodman is widely recognised for his intricate and expressive wood‑engraved portraits, blending traditional engraving with techniques inspired by oil painting to create multi‑layered, richly textured prints. His work explores the beauty and nuance of the human form, drawing influence from 800 years of European art, from medieval panel painting to contemporary printmaking.

Ben’s work has been exhibited across the UK and internationally. He is the youngest engraver of his generation to be elected to The Society of Wood Engravers, and the recipient of the Rachel Reckitt Prize in 2023 and 2025.

Alongside his studio practice, Ben is a Senior Technician at UWE Bristol, specialising in engraving and relief printmaking.
