Samhain

Avalon Archaeology

Transition into the darker half of the year as we celebrate and delve into the traditions of Samhain!

 Coming up:  31st October 2026

Put trick or treating aside and explore the ancient roots of this festival, mentioned by Julius Ceasar on his visit to Britain over 2000 years ago! We’ll be telling stories and riddles around the fire, welcoming back the wonderful Wild Moon Morris and getting hands on with crafts.

Part of our Wheel of the Year celebrations, Samhain represents that liminal time as Autumn draws to a close and we welcome in Winter. In many Celtic traditions this was viewed as the New Year. Read the Wheel of the Year blog.

Learn about customs and traditions linked to this ancient festival, including the original Jack O’ Lanterns with turnips being carved.

Come get hands on as we’ll be ‘guising’ with grotesque wooden masks made and decorated throughout the day. Culminating in a masked procession at 3pm around the site and a competition (and prizes) for the best outfit (think Grendel and it’s mother)!

What to expect on the day:

-Watch a turnip being carved.
-Make and decorate a mask.
-Hear stories, poems and riddles around the fire.
-Witness Wild Moon Morris perform.
-Join in our masked procession at 3pm and guising competition.

Some activities may require a small additional charge.
