Looking for budget-friendly ways to keep the kids entertained this summer?
Inspired by The Museum of Somerset’s summer exhibition; ‘Wow! Amazing Science in Children’s Books’ and family fun; we’ve curated 60 science-themed activities for families to do at home or around Somerset. Each week explores a theme within the exhibition, from the human body to food, to robots and space.

Week 1 – 🧪 Mad about Science! 🔬
🧪Meet the Wacky Professor at the Museum of Somerset and take part in his challenges (22 – 24 July).
🧪Create bridges and build tall towers using marshmallows and spaghetti.
🧪Play Crazy Golf at Orchard Shopping Centre in Taunton on Sat 26 July. Download your scorecard here.
🧪 Explore Bridgwater’s Industrial past at Blake Museum.
🧪 Visit Westonzoyland Pumping Station on a Sunday 1-5pm (or head to their Midsummer Steam Up on Wed 30 July 11:00 – 16:00).
🧪 Lift water with an Archimedes screw at Vivary Park.
🧪 Watch the steam trains at Blue Anchor Beach or take a ride on the West Somerset Railway.
🧪 Visit Avalon Archaeology to learn about the hypocaust heating system invented by the Romans (open Saturdays and Sundays over the summer holidays).
🧪 Borrow science books from Taunton Library and do some at home science experiments.
🧪 Create your own DIY telescope and spot dinosaurs at Coates English Willow.

Week 2 – 🫀 The Amazing Human Body 🩻
🫀Join us at The Museum of Somerset for ‘Gut Feeling’ a live science show and make a face out of clay.
🫀Test your aim with archery at Dunster Country Fair on 30 July.
🫀 Using a sheet of wallpaper or greaseproof paper, lie on the floor and get someone to draw around your outline. Draw and cut out all the major organs of the body and try to stick them in the right place.
🫀 Go for a walk and plot your route to create some Strava Art – can you make the outline of a face, body part or a person?
🫀 Join in with Yoga in the Park, every Sunday morning in Vivary Park or Junior Park Run at Long Run Meadows.
🫀 Visit the Imaginarium at Taunton’s Brewhouse Theatre (Thursday 31 July) or complete a spy mission in one of our Somerset towns.
🫀 Test your strength and see how high you can climb at Chalk Up Bouldering Wall in Nether Stowey or at the Minehead Eye.
🫀 From Shapwick Heath bike ride across the Somerset levels to Glastonbury and meet the artist Liz Gregory for colourful collages at Somerset Rural Life Museum.
🫀 Visit Wells and Mendip Museum and see the bones of the Witch of Wookey Hole.

Week 3 – 🍓 Food, Glorious Food! 🧀
🍓 Help create a cardboard banquet with INKJAM at the museum and decorate a biscuit.
🍓 Grow your own – start a small herb or veg garden at home in pots.
🍓 Go for a walk at Cheddar Gorge and visit the caves to learn where cheddar cheese comes from.
🍓 Go on a foraging walk around your local area and try out these edible science experiments.
🍓 Make your own Dandelion Honey or jam.
🍓 Head to Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury learn about farming in Somerset. Join in with ‘Foody Fun’ on Sat 9 Aug and orchard inspired poetry on Thurs 7 Aug.
🍓 Explore Sheppy’s Cider Farm for an orchard walk, playground and duck pond to explore.
🍓 Visit Taunton Farmers Market or Granny Smith’s and pick out some fruit and veg for a picnic on the Quantock Hills, make sure to take all your rubbish home with you (and remember not to share your lunch with the ponies).
🍓 Cycle the Strawberry Line near Cheddar, part of an old railway line that used to transport strawberries from the West Country to London & Birmingham.
🍓 Visit Barleymow’s Maize Maze near Chard.

Week 4 – 🐛 The World Beneath Our Feet 🦋
🐛 Meet the brilliant bugs from Bugfest at the Museum of Somerset.
🐛 Go pond dipping.
🐛 Go on a bug hunt around Long Run Meadow or your local park.
🐛 Watch Horrible Science on CBBC – Have a go at Darwin’s Nifty Natural World Quiz BBC
🐛 Go for a walk along the River Tone or River Parrett and keep an eye out for dragonflies.
🐛 Create a bug hotel in a corner of your garden or local park.
🐛 Count the bees at Somerset Lavender and create your own seed bomb at home.
🐛 Take part in the Big Butterfly Count.
🐛 Go butterfly and bird spotting at Steart Marshes.

Week 5 – 🤖 Robots Unleashed 🤖
🤖 Meet Radar the Robot Dog at the museum and create a robot mask.
🤖 Read or watch The Wild Robot and create a robotic hand.
🤖 Design and make your own lego robot.
🤖 Create a ‘junk bot’ from recycled materials.
🤖 Explore the summer home of Ada Lovelace (world’s first computer programmer) and find the fairy tunnels at Porlock Weir.
🤖 Have a go at a codebreaking activity.
🤖 Join the Saturday Switch Club 10:00 – 12:00 at Taunton or Bridgwater Libraries.
🤖 Code and create your own Marty Robot with the Marty web app.
🤖 Play mini golf at Vivary Park and analyse the angle of your shots like a robot.

Week 6 – 🚀 Cosmic Creators 🪐
🚀 Visit the museum to create your own galactical planet or star.
🚀 Create a spaceship wand at the museum and blast along the Somerset Canal Space Walk. Stop at Somerset Boat Centre or Maunsel Lock Tea rooms for a refuel.
🚀 Make your own cardboard rocket.
🚀 Create a design for a Space Rover that would be able to zoom around the moon.
🚀 Play moon landing battleships.
🚀 Build and test your own rocket launcher.
🚀 Make your own ‘moon dough’ or ‘moon sand‘.
🚀 Make a straw propelled rocket or rocket mice!
🚀 Visit the Planetarium at We the Curious in Bristol or play the man on the moon game.

Featured artists include internationally acclaimed picture book creator Oliver Jeffers, renowned Usborne illustrator Colin King, best known for the beloved ‘See Inside’ series, and Yuval Zommer, illustrator of ‘The Street Beneath My Feet’, recognised as one of The Guardian’s top 15 modern classics – plus many more talented names.
