It sets out the criteria for inclusion on the List, the locations that the LHL covers, and the information we&#8217;re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criteria for local listing make sure the decision making process is accountable and fair. But they are flexible and a diverse range of entries is encouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A heritage asset can be any kind of man-made space or area.<\/strong> It might be a house, a monument, or street furniture like a postbox. Infrastructure, public artworks, archaeological features and historic parks and gardens are also welcome. If it\u2019s part of Somerset\u2019s diverse heritage, we\u2019re keen to hear about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Places on the List don&#8217;t necessarily have to be grand or famous. Their significance might even be very personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nominated assets must meet the following conditions to be considered as a candidate for the Local Heritage List:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The asset must be situated <strong>within the modern administrative county of Somerset<\/strong>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exmoorher.co.uk\/theme\/TEM17\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.exmoorher.co.uk\/theme\/TEM17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Exmoor National Park<\/strong><\/a>. The precise location of the asset must be provided.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"586\" height=\"327\" src=\"https:\/\/swheritage.org.uk\/historic-environment-service\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/11\/2023.09.20-Revised-County-Map.jpg\" alt=\"Map showing extent of project area, including modern administrative county of Somerset and area of Exmoor National Park\" class=\"wp-image-1532\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The asset <strong>cannot be designated, or part of another designated asset<\/strong>; I.E. not a listed building (including curtilage buildings or structures), a scheduled monument, a registered park and garden, or a registered battlefield. Non Designated Heritage Assets within a conservation area are an exception and may be locally listed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The asset must be a <strong>permanent<\/strong> building, structure, object, monument, item of street furniture or artwork, site, place, area, garden, or landscape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The asset must hold <strong>heritage interest<\/strong> (archaeological, architectural, artistic or historic).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-criteria\">Selection Themes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to be added to the List, an asset should illustrate at least one of these qualities to a strong degree (or three or more at a moderate level):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Age<\/strong> \u2013 this gives an asset substantial value (but newer places will be considered too).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rarity<\/strong> &#8211; in a structure\u2019s purpose, type, or features. It might be rare within a region, or a very local area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Distinctive design<\/strong> \u2013 for instance construction using local materials, rare crafting techniques, or by a noteworthy architect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Historical association <\/strong>\u2013 for example with a famous person, a powerful memory, or a story from Somerset\u2019s past.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Evidential value <\/strong>\u2013 material evidence of past human activity which shows how people and places have developed. This might be buried archaeology or above ground. A preserved garden layout, a gravestone, or an abandoned village would all qualify.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Social and communal value<\/strong> \u2013 places of treasured local identity, including where community interactions, acts of worship, and cultural events have taken place; or where strong group memories were made.
