Head of Archives Janet Tall tells the story of Lewis Mills Burfitt from Ilfracombe who was imprisoned by the Japanese in China during World War Two.

The handwritten diary of Lewis Burfitt is in the collection of the South West Heritage Trust, and includes incredible detail about life in the civilian internment camp in Shandong Province. It covers everything from infighting in the camp to births, deaths, illness and black market operations.  Discover what it was like to be in a camp with hundreds of people of many nationalities; how they coped with the conditions, the food, the extremes of heat and cold, and of his longing for the West Country.
