Reopening Plans

We’re intending a phased reopening of South West Heritage Trust sites, beginning with a partial return of staff during July. It’s expected that public reopening will follow in early August. Exact dates and plans are being decided and will reflect government advice and our determination to offer a safe environment for visitors, staff and others. We’ll be undertaking online consultation with the public, and will also be seeking the views of our volunteers. As more information becomes available we’ll provide updates on our website and through our social media channels. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

18 March – Site Closures

At this very concerning time the health and wellbeing of visitors, staff and volunteers is of paramount importance to the South West Heritage Trust.

For that reason the Trust has decided to close all its sites to the public from 5.00 pm on Wednesday 18 March. These sites are:

The Museum of Somerset, Taunton

Somerset Rural Life Museum, Glastonbury

Somerset Brick and Tile Museum, Bridgwater

Somerset Heritage Centre, Taunton

Devon Heritage Centre, Exeter

North Devon Record Office, Barnstaple

If you have booked and paid in advance for an event, please contact the venue via email and we would be happy to provide a refund.

We don’t yet know when we’ll reopen, but look forward to welcoming you back as soon as we can.

In the meantime, thank you very much for your support and understanding. Best wishes from us all and keep safe.

19 March – Archive Research Enquries

Q. Will you be able to answer my Research Service request/my initial enquiry?

A. We will endeavour to answer general questions during this time, although our response may take longer. Unfortunately, we are unable to access the majority of our collections at present. Due to this we cannot check, search or provide copies of the vast majority of documents through our research service. We would ask that you please contact us with your request when the service returns to normal operation.

Guides to many of our collections, as well as advice on researching various topics, accessing and using records and how to request research (once this service resumes), can be found on our Research Guides pages for Somerset and Devon.

20 March – Events

Last updated 27 May

We have taken the decision to postpone or cancel all planned events up to the end of June and to review later events in due course.

If you have booked and paid in advance for an event, please contact us and we would be happy to provide a refund. You can email us using the contact details above. We will process this as soon as possible but there maybe some delays due to site access.

We’ll be updating our website regularly with the latest information or you can sign up to our e-newsletters to hear when events have been rescheduled.
