Somerset Heritage Centre

The Museums Service’s reserve collection is stored at the Somerset Heritage Centre.

We can’t display all the objects we hold but they’re available for researchers and visitors to look at by appointment. Objects may also be used in temporary exhibitions or loaned to other institutions.

The collection includes objects relating to Costume and Textiles, Fine and Decorative Art, Archaeology, Natural Sciences and Social History.

We also care for the Somerset Military Museum Trust and North Somerset Council collections at this site.

Accessing the Collections

It’s free to visit the Somerset Heritage Centre to access the collections. Appointments must be made and we advise two working weeks notice as a minimum. All research applications will be assessed according to departmental availability.

Donations to the Museum Collections

We welcome offers to fill gaps in our collections.

We only take objects which have a clear Somerset or North Somerset provenance or which tell a Somerset story.

We also take into consideration the condition of items before they are accepted into the collections.

Items will usually only be accepted as gifts.

Somerset Military Museum only accepts objects relating to the following Somerset Regiments:

·         The Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert’s)

·         The Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry

·         The West Somerset Yeomanry

·         The North Somerset Yeomanry

·         The Somerset Militia, Rifle Volunteers and Territorials

·         The Light Infantry and its successor regiment, The Rifles

If you would like to donate an object which fits the above criteria, please contact the Curatorial Team at When emailing please include images of the object and as much detail about its history as possible.
